Totally hear you. It is not ultimately the personal brand that matters, but what people perceive about that brand. A wonderful philosophical point. I would slightly disagree about the packaging though... we all by tons of stuff influanced by the package. A great package is just short hand for a great product. It makes the decision making easier and we are all looking for a little help here and there. So to my mind, it seems that one of the first easy steps we should take in our personal brand is to consolidate all our stuff in one place. That would say a lot about our personal brand and reputation not least of which would be that we are user oriented and utilitarian because we help people meet us. After all, It's about who knows you more than it is about who you know and therefore we should make it easy to be known.
Joseph, thanks for the comments.Consolidation of the personal brand is an excellent idea and one that I am not doing very well at present. It's much easier to control brand and reputation is you shape and participate in the process.Provide people with what they need to know about you, so they can make their own judgments quickly, and help become advocates for you.
